Who will Consignment sale focuses on gowns

After Joy Sabo got divorced, she wondered where she could go to sell her wedding dress. The 35-year-old would almost inevitably come across a gown or prom dress while spending her weekends going to yard sales with her mother. "It just didn't seem like the appropriate place to sell or buy a wedding dress. You can't try it on," she said. So Sabo, at the urging of a friend, decided to start Southern Belle's Closet, a new seasonal consignment event in Knoxville that specializes in secondhand gowns, formal attire and accessories. Prom and pageant dresses as well as designer handbags and shoes are also being accepted.

Sabo plans to hold the event twice a year and hopes to eventually expand to Nashville and Atlanta. The idea, she added, has appealed to parents looking to save a couple hundred dollars on a wedding gown or formal dresses for sorority functions and multiple proms. "You never know until you try," she said. "No one's doing it. I'm excited to see how it unfolds." Registration is still open for interested consignors, and Sabo is looking for volunteers to work the event, which she has been planning since May. It will operate similar to other consignment sales that Knoxville has embraced, including Duck Duck Goose and Jack and Jules children's consignment sales and Flip-flop adult consignment.

There will be a presale and the last day items selected by its consignors will be priced half-off. As a courtesy, consignors can upload their tag information and it will be printed and ready at drop off. The inaugural event will be held Sept. 11-15. A location is expected to be announced soon. The second event will be held in February.
